General description
Founded in 1485 by Queen D. Leonor. Leonor, the Thermal Hospital of Caldas da Rainha is the oldest in the world, with five centuries of existence.
In the 15th century, Queen D. Leonor founded a bathing establishment and a thermal hospital, the Caldas da Rainha.
According to the story, in 1484, the wife of D. Joao II was on her way to Batalha and, passing by the site where As Caldas is located, she saw some poor people immersed in "those warm waters that came out of the fountain from which smoke was rising."
They told him that they were sick with "frialdades" and that those waters remedied their ailments. D. Leonor then decided to create better conditions for to use of the waters.
The current Thermal Hospital, built at the end of the 19th century, has high windows and is a good example of thermal architecture.

The waters are hypersaline, sulfur, and sodium chloride
They are indicated for the respiratory system (sinusitis, chronic rhinitis, chronic laryngitis, bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, hypertrophic and atrophic) and rheumatic and musculoskeletal ailments (osteoarthritis, inflammatory rheumatism, gout, post-traumatic sequelae).
