General description

This spring dates back to the 16th century and belonged to the Monastery of Santa María de Melón and was known as Baños de Cerves (after the river in which it springs).

Prexigueiro(also known as the Termas de Ribadavia) is, above all, known for thefacilities, located at the top of the hillside, built by the architect Suances. It is a thermal circuit of private management, which exploits the waters in the form of caldas. This space has rooms with various treatments and it is planned to provide them with accommodation in the future. These open-air pools are private and payable.

Neighbors in the area have adapted several pools in the riverbed itself. Thus, along the Cerves river, in the lower part of the slope, visitors can find the Prexigueiro pools that are used freely, in the open, public and free access. The access to the river pools is very simple, just follow a path that is located next to the road leading to the hot springs. This path borders the payment facilities. After descending for a couple of minutes, you come to the river and the old bathhouse. A little further on, there are the pools.

Nowadays, the fame of these waters attracts both locals and foreigners.

How to book.

Tickets to the Prexigueiro hot springs in Ribadavia cannot be purchased online! Neither are you allowed to book by appointment by phone: entry is on a first-come, first-served basis.

We share with you the official website of the Termas de Prexigueiro: http://www.termasprexigueiro.com/ (as you'll see it's a bit of an old-fashioned site) and you can contact them by email. They also have Facebook accounts (which they don't update either) and at Twitter, but you'd better call them by phone, especially in case there is any change in the schedules from now on (last September, they changed their schedules again so better check them on the web than on Google).

Prices 2022

The thermal circuit lasts 90 minutes and the updated rates are €5.70 for adults and €5.10 for children (from 5 to 8 years old) and pensioners.

Our experience at Termas Prexigueiro

The visit to the Prexigueiro hot springs was very pleasant. The arrival, by private vehicle, was easy and we had room to leave the car in the parking lot. We went in November 2021, so it was not too crowded. It is also true that the organization is good, as the capacity was controlled by means of shifts that had to be requested at the reception. In the reception itself as well as in the cafeteria and its terrace there are screens to follow the order of call.

Once inside, after receiving detailed information, the changing rooms are somewhat old but functional and equipped with toilets, lockers to leave your things, showers and changing rooms. The thermal facilities are very pleasant, inserted in nature and, at the same time, intimate thanks to the protection of the building itself. The ideal is to "behave well" and follow the order indicated in each pool, alternating with cold dips between the pools, whether warm or hot.

When we finished, we decided to eat at the buffet restaurant available on the premises (it is a good idea to book before entering the hot springs). The offer is not wide, but the price and quality are more than correct, to which must be added the convenience of eating something in the place itself at an affordable price and not worrying about going elsewhere ... we all know how hungry it is to soak!

What to see and do in the Prexigueiro area

If you want to do some sightseeing in the area of Prexigueiro, we also recommend the Ruta do Viño do Ribeiro and the Prexigueiro Bridge (of medieval origin), which is just a 3-minute drive away. Another place not to be missed is the beautiful medieval village of Ribadavia (Ourense).

You can also visit the Olivian city of Vigo, which is only an hour's drive away (about 70 km on the highway), or Santiago de Compostela which is 115 km away (an hour and a quarter on the highway).

Description of the Balneario

The facilities that we describe on our website are private (paid). It is an old building with 5 outdoor pools in a natural environment surrounded by forests to enjoy even more the thermal circuit.

  • In this link of our website, we provide you with more information about the Thermal baths of Ourense and other thermal baths in the middle of nature.
  • If you want to visit other free thermal baths of bicarbonated waters in Ourense we recommend the Termas Outariz.
  • If you are looking for not only thermal baths but rather a spa hotel, in the province of Ourense, Arnoia Caldaria is in that same area also in the province of Ourense.

The facilities of Prexigueiro are arranged as a thermal circuit of five pools of hot water, outdoors, inspired by the millenary thermal tradition of Japan. It is called Kumano Kodo, in honor of one of the most famous pilgrimage routes in the country of the rising sun.

Each pool is baptized in a different way, following the Japanese tradition of hot springs:

Kumano Kodo, in honor of one of the most famous pilgrimage routes in the country of the rising sun.

  • Rotenburo Onsen, i.e. an open-air hot spring, but in an enclosed area.
  • Hongu Onsen, in reference to the area through which the most important pilgrimage roads of Kumano pass.
  • Tsuboyu Onsen, whose name is inspired by an ancient hot spring.
  • Shingu Onsen is a name taken from the locality where one of the great shrines of Kumano is located.
  • Nachi Viewpoint is an excellent spot to relocate to the present moment by relaxing to the sounds of the Cerves River.

To thoroughly enjoy the tour, the ideal is to follow the numbering on the signs next to the name of the pools. The experience will not be complete without diving into the barrels of cold water between one pool and the next. These two cold water points are called Ofuro Ribeiro and Ofuro Chouzan -which, in addition to a barrel, features a cold water jet-. At the end of the tour, visitors can enjoy the jets of a small thermal pool with hydromassage. Of course, in Prexigueiro you can book various treatments: massages, peeling, moisturizing, wraps, etc.

It is advisable to bathe for 10-15 minutes in each hot spring and complete the circuit, alternating the hot springs with the contrast of cold water. The total time of the visit is 90 minutes, from the moment the visitor receives the keys at reception until he/she returns them. It is also a good idea not to shower after the circuit so that the properties of the water act longer.

The facilities also include a sauna.
