General description
A few meters from the avant-garde Millennium Bridge, next to the right bank (north) of the river, are the Termas de A Chavasqueria, which inaugurates the well-known Thermal Route of the Miño. These are the most popular and emblematic thermal facilities in Ourense.
Also known as Caldas do Bispo (in reference to Cardinal Quevedo, who ordered to condition them for sick visitors), the thermal area of A Chavasqueira is divided into two parts: a small free thermal baths and a thermal station of payment.
The free area is very close to the Miño river, practically on its bed; in fact, it is quite common for it to flood in winter. It has walks and changing rooms.
In 2019 an arson fire destroyed the payment facilities.
Description of the Balneario
It consists of:
- Rotenburo: 3 outdoor pools for collective bathing (41º C).
- Ofuro: indoor bathtub for individual bathing (39º C)
- Templarium: sauna in stone and lousa (40º C - 85% humidity)
- Sudarium: sauna in stone and wood (45º C - 85 % humidity)
- Tsumetai: cold water barrel for thermal shock.
It offers a massage menu and cafeteria service.
Type of waters
The springs of A Chavasqueira were used by neighbors and visitors as early as the early s. XIX. They were known as the "Caldas del Obispo" in reference to Cardinal Quevedo who ordered to condition them for the comfort of the sick who came. The bishop also provided a space for his personal enjoyment, a stone temple built in stone that is still preserved inside the Baths.
The hyperthermal waters at A Chavasqueira flow at 64ºC (although they are cooled for bathing to about 43ºC) and are especially indicated for the treatment of rheumatism, arthritis, asthma or skin infections. They are bicarbonated, fluoridated and sulfurized waters of medium mineralization.
They are also recommended for the treatment of rheumatism, arthritis, asthma and skin infections.
