Thermalism and Thermal villages

The enjoyment and use of thermal waters is a tradition that has existed for thousands of years. However, it will be in ancient Greece where the first medical centers with thermal waters are created. In fact, it was the Greek historian Philostratus who first mentioned the healing properties of thermal water (the thermal therapy enjoyed by the Achaean warriors on their return from the Trojan war).

The Roman civilization's fondness for thermalism is also well known: the Roman baths and thermal baths are famous. It is also added the social function of these places, transcending the purely curative function.

During the medieval centuries the thermal tradition in Christian areas survives only in a popular way, especially in rural and remote areas, where the tradition survived and the neighbors continued to take advantage of the benefits of the waters. On the other hand, it has great importance in the Islamic civilization.

If we take a wide leap in time, we discover that, arriving the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, there is a real revival of the thermal tradition. This renewal comes hand in hand with the flourishing of the bourgeoisie. Also in the 19th century the figure of the doctor-bath director was created and the boom of hygienism took place, which led to the emergence of the tendency among the upper classes to "take the waters" or, in other words, spend holiday seasons in spas.

At this time of revival, numerous scientific studies highlighting the benefits of waters are being carried out. Two clear trends are defined: large spas and more modest ones, often owned by the municipality or neighbors. In both cases, the increase in supply and demand led to the emergence of accommodation and catering businesses to meet the needs of visitors. The concept of thermal village is also born, where tourism is understood in an integral way. Health, culture, nature, leisure and gastronomy come together in these thermal destinations.

The boom of the thermalism is maintained until the first decades of the 20th century. However, it suffers a halt because of the Civil War and the post-war crisis. It was not until the 1980s that a new resurgence of the sector took place.

What is a thermal village?

As we mentioned before, under the protection of the evolution of supply and demand in the places of greater development of the thermal tourism in the boom of the XIX century, the populations see how lodging and restoration businesses arise around the thermal product. Thus the thermal villages arise, where the visitor can find a complete offer to satisfy his needs of health, culture, gastronomy, leisure, etc.

There are more than 70 thermal villages distributed among almost all the Autonomous Communities. Let's get to know them!
